Five Insurance Gaps Ohio Boaters Don't Know

Being legally compliant on the water is essential, but insurance is your lifeline if something goes wrong. And here’s the truth: many boaters in Ohio are dangerously underinsured without realizing it. Below are five critical gaps that OSSA Insurance educates every boater about during policy reviews.

1. Your Homeowners Insurance May Not Fully Cover Your Boat

Most Ohio homeowners policies only offer very limited boat coverage, usually restricted to:

  • Boats under 25 hp
  • No liability for others
  • No coverage away from your property
  • No coverage for theft from marinas or docks

If your boat is motorized, stored off-site, or valued over a few thousand dollars, it likely needs a separate watercraft policy.

2. Towing and Emergency Assistance May Not Be Included

Standard policies often don’t include on-water towing, or they cap assistance at very low amounts. A tow from the middle of a lake can cost you hundreds of dollars.

We recommend adding emergency towing and trailer roadside assistance for peace of mind.

3. You May Be Personally Liable for Injuries or Damage

Boat collisions, passenger injuries, or damage to docks/property can all result in lawsuits. Without sufficient liability coverage, you could be on the hook for:

  • Medical costs
  • Property repair
  • Legal fees
  • Settlements or judgments

This is the most financially devastating gap for boaters, and one we always prioritize fixing.

4. Your Gear Might Not Be Covered

That fish finder, custom trolling motor, YETI cooler, or $1,000 rod setup? Many boat policies in Ohio exclude or severely limit coverage for personal equipment unless it’s explicitly listed on the policy.

At OSSA, we often find that clients underinsure the value of what's actually on board.

If you’ve invested in quality gear, electronics, or add-ons, it may warrant an increase in your overall policy limits - or a separate rider - to ensure you're fully protected if there’s damage, theft, or a claim.

5. Your Trailer Might Not Be Covered Either

Boat trailers are commonly misunderstood. Many assume their auto insurance will cover it, but that’s not true. Only Liability Insurance extends during towing - and not for theft, vandalism, or other physical damage. A separate trailer policy is often the smartest move for full protection.

A quick review of your boating policy or needs with an agent can help you avoid finding out the hard way. Stay safe out there, Captain!
